Students studying textile design at GCSE visited the Abakhan fabric and craft store in Birkenhead in May to learn more about how textiles are sold and supplied. They also purchased fabrics they will need to make their final design.
During the visit students browsed the wide range of fabrics and textiles components for sale. They were able to think about which materials would be best for the designs they have created, with each student given £10 to purchase the fabrics they required to make their own final design.
Students saw how fabrics were weighed and measured to calculate cost and worked within their budget to buy the things they needed.
In a similar way to geography fieldwork in North Wales or a history trip to London, this visit is a good example of how teaching focuses not just on skills and techniques and theoretical knowledge but also on the subject out there in the ‘real world’.
