Ten year 8 and 9 students attended the CISCO Girls in IT Day hosted by the University of Liverpool at Ness Botanical Gardens in May. As well as being introduced to women who have built successful careers in IT and academia, they took part in IT-related challenges.
The event was designed to encourage young women to think about future career possibilities in IT and STEM-related subjects. STEM refers to science, technology, engineering and maths.
Miss Clark says:
“The girls had the opportunity to hear from women in IT and to use their creative thinking in different tasks throughout the day, including trying to beat AI and coding Lego robots to go through different obstacles.
“Our very own Ellie and Raisa in year 9 were the first to complete the robot task, winning CISCO medals, and Vira and Molly in year 8 won a Dragons’ Den-type challenge to deliver a pitch about an AI product.
“Molly and Vira came up with an idea for using AI to help young people understand historical events.
“Well done to them. And indeed each one of our girls spoke and delivered their presentations amazingly.
“This was a fantastic event which showed these young people that women can be successful in fields such as IT. It also demonstrated the importance of both creative and logical thinking.
“I was so proud of how the students rose to each challenge and that each of them demonstrated courage in standing in front of a room of experts, presenting their ideas thoughtfully and with confidence.”
