Digging Deeper into Dickens

What a magnificent effort from Reece in year 10!

Reece really went ‘above and beyond’ with his half-term English homework. The task that students were set involved some preparatory work ahead of their study of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol this coming half-term. Reece created models of the main characters using tin foil, clay and cardboard.

Mrs Giannatos, Head of English, said:

“Students were asked to complete a ‘context project’ ahead of their study of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. This project required them to find out details about Dickens’ life and about life in Victorian Britain more generally. A Christmas Carol was published in 1843, six years after Queen Victoria ascended the throne.

“This contextual knowledge will help students to understand the message that Dickens was trying to get across to his readers in his novella. Also, knowing about the lives that people led in the time that Dickens was writing will support students’ emotional literacy, as they develop their ability to understand and perhaps sympathise with the feelings of the characters they are reading about.”

Learning about the context in which texts were written is a big part of what we do in English. The work that Reece has done is excellent and will really help his understanding and enjoyment of this Dickens masterpiece.
