GCSE students have been celebrating their exam results, which included some outstanding individual achievements.
It was a warm welcome back to year 11 students [including Archie and Muhammed, pictured below] who returned to school on 20 August to collect their GCSE exam results at the end of an extraordinary year. They now move on to the next stage of their education, with many heading to Birkenhead Sixth Form College to study A levels.
Ms Williams said: “Congratulations to all the students who received their exam results today. I am delighted that these results properly reward students’ hard work, effort and dedication.
“By the time normal schooling came to an abrupt halt in March, many of them had attended countless lunchtime and after-school classes, extended Friday-evening sessions and Saturday School, all in addition to their regular lessons. These results are thoroughly deserved.
“It goes without saying that year 11 is always a stressful time for young people, but the upheaval endured by students this year has been unprecedented.
“They were denied the opportunity to sit examinations they had spent many months working towards. They also missed out on all the usual leavers’ celebrations. And then, in the last few weeks, they watched on with growing uncertainty as exam results were published in Scotland, followed by A-level results in the rest of the UK.
“Now that they have received their results, they can focus on the next stage of their educational journey. I wish them all well.
“I believe it is essential that the long-established rites of passage we associate with leaving school do take place, even if not at the traditional time or in the traditional way. We have assured the students that they will not miss out and that we will come together again at some point to celebrate their achievements and successes.”
