STEM Enrichment Challenge Success

Well done to year 8 students Thisandi, Kadie, Isabella, Laurence and Taylor who returned to Hulme Hall in March for a celebration and showcase event, joining teams from schools from across the north west who had first met there in November for a fantastic STEM enrichment challenge.

The event, which challenges students from schools in the north west to design a sustainable product, is part of the Unilever Bright Future Inspire Programme, supported by All About STEM.

The aim, according to the All About STEM website, is “to get students engaged with STEM subjects by introducing them to the sorts of activities that take place on site at a global organisation’s research and development site”.

The introductory session in November centred around five workshops that explored things relating to the research and development process, such as formulation, packaging and digital issues. The students were given four months to design a planet-friendly product.

The five Ridgeway students proudly unveiled their project design at the showcase event: a sulphatefree shampoo that is environmentally friendly and ergonomically designed.

Mr Hudson says: “The students were required to present their product on four separate occasions to judges who then asked questions regarding things like design choices, formulation, costs and ease of manufacture.

“They presented brilliantly and were able to field incredibly tricky questions with ease, showing excellent knowledge and understanding.”
