Reading Nook Design Challenge

Many congratulations to Lola Rose and Silverlee (both in year 7), who wowed the judges to win our reading nook design challenge, which encouraged students to tap into their creativity and come up with ideas for developing the refectory area to promote our whole-school reading for pleasure initiative.

The judging panel was made up of:

  • Mrs Giannatos
  • Mathew Giles from MGMA Architects
  • local author Jennifer Hayashi Danns
  • Jordan Taylor-Jones from The West Kirby Bookshop

Students were free to decide for themselves how to put across their ideas – from drawing a sketch to making a physical model. Entrants who reached the shortlisting stage were then asked to give a presentation in front of the judging panel.

Lola Rose and Silverlee’s creativity and assured presentation wowed the judges. They win a voucher for £50 which they can spend in The West Kirby Bookshop.

Well done, too, to all the students who were shortlisted: Ethan (year 7), Maizie-Anne (year 7), the members of 8JGU, Thomas (year 10), and Paige and Honnie (year 10). They each receive a £20 voucher.

Lola Rose and Silverlee will now discuss next steps with the architects. They will get to visit the architects’ offices and meet the shopfitters too, so they really will be involved in the whole process!

I am extremely grateful for the support from The West Kirby Bookshop, MGMA Architects and Jennifer Hayashi Danns in helping to organise and judge the competition. We look forward to further collaborations with them in the future.
