This year’s year 9 and year 10 DofE cohort took part in their first training walk at the end of April as part of their preparations for the Expedition element of the award, which they will complete in a few weeks’ time.
The students walked from the Hadlow Road heritage railway station along the Wirral Way to Thurstaston. The day also involved learning the practicalities of map reading and navigation. The students each took part in leading their group and identified symbols and landmarks around them.
This training walk was in addition to the regular training that students do each week and the support they receive to complete the Physical, Skills and Volunteering elements of the award.
Training continues on Fridays for an hour after school. Future training sessions cover things like nutrition and cooking, navigation and route planning, first aid, and pitching and striking tents.
In addition to our cohort of bronze-award students, we have 20 students undertaking the silver award this year. Most of them have already completed the bronze award, but some are direct entrants. These students are in year 11 and wanted to join in when they heard how much fun students had last year.
